Life is funny. When you’re really young, it seems like it lasts forever (and it does). Then when you’re 20, you’re pretty old and feeling pretty good about it – big possibilities, and there’s lots of time.

Things happen, then more things.

You get caught up in all the things. One day you’re, say, 60. Twenty years ago you were 40 . . . getting on, and those first forty years went by like nothing. Add another twenty; it’s just another twenty. It doesn't take that long to get there.

More things happen and pretty soon you’re knock, knock, knockin’.
The world went by, but you were in it.

Now you finally take the time to notice,
and you watch the world go by.
And it does.

I wrote this song when I reflected back to when Jackie DeShannon was singing "What The World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love" so many years ago. We believed that was the answer then, and I thought we would have it by now.

Still, we have lived through remarkable times. It’s 2017 and it certainly looks like there are more interesting times to come.

Credits:
There’s a lot going on in this song. I can’t believe I used up all my tracks! Vocals, synths, bells and tambourines, my Rickenbacker 12-string, and my Firebird through a Mel pedal. This song was coming along pretty well and for quite a while I thought it was done. Then I brought Jamie Philp in to add guitars. At first, it was mainly to add some substance to the middle section where I quoted JS Bach’s "Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring". It turned out to be much more than that, and Jamie filled things out a lot with his guitar playing, acoustic and electric, throughout the song. Another week or more went by as I reflected on what I had. That middle section was still bothering me. It seemed like it needed to be more than just a repeat of the JS Bach line.
I asked Jamie to come back and ‘try something’ with some warm distortion on electric guitar. He tried a few things. Then one of the takes was the special one. It’s the beautiful guitar work on the second half of the Jesu instrumental section. That’s now my favourite part.

Lyrics

Passing Through Time
by Wilfred Kozub

Just what the world needs – just what the world needs
Just what the world needs, sisters and brothers
Just what the world needs – just what the world needs
Just what the world needs -LOVE sisters and brothers

I wander alone as a cloud in the sky
The people below are just passing by
Discouraged people living out their own lives
Day after day . . . wondering

Just what the world needs – just what the world needs
Just what the world needs, sisters and brothers
Just what the world needs – it’s just what the world needs
Just what the world needs, brothers and sisters

We had nothing to lose
Living in bliss
But we had no idea
It would be like this

(instrumental interlude)

Passing through time . . . passing through time . . . passing through time
LOVE
We’re passing through time . . . passing through time . . . passing through time

Every world is just like the world
Every world is just like the world
Every world’s a part of the world
(keep it simple)
Every world’s the end of the world
Every world’s the start of the world
Every world is just like the world
(keep it simple)

I wonder
I wonder
I wonder
I wonder
