This is a song I started several years ago. I was recording a music bed for it when my recording system crashed. I was able to salvage the main section and the feel of the song, but there was nothing left that I could work with. When I finally got back to the song early in 2016, I had to recreate it from scratch. It was actually pretty hard to do because it was in a bit of an oddball key compared to most of my songs. At that point, I didn’t even have a title . . . or a melody. I identified my new bed recording of the song with the working title “Say Something”. I ended up sticking with the title and used it as a focal point for the lyrics. There were a lot of different possibilities for a song called “Say Something,” but what you hear on this recording is what I ended up with.

Credits: I start most of my songs in my home studio where I sing and play on the basic tracks. On this one I played all the keyboard parts and basic electronic drums plus a few of the guitar parts. I sang and added a few finger pops and claps. Then I brought Jamie Philp in to play a variety of rhythm and lead guitar parts with his Telecaster and his Hohner Steinberger (the one with no headstock). Clint Frazier (Shout Out Out Out Out/Physical Copies) later played his Simmons kit to bring some life to the drums, especially in the middle instrumental section where I asked him to ‘think disco’. That’s my son, Nik Kozub (Shout Out Out Out Out/the Paronomasiac), on the Carole Kaye-inspired bass. These guys totally nailed it.

Lyrics

Say Something
by Wilfred Kozub

There’s something on your mind and there is something on mine
When I ask you what you think, you can’t think of anything
I’m not the nosey kind but I can’t read your mind
What I get is what I see and it’s all good with me.

But when you’re so sad
I feel so bad
I just want to tell you

Say something funny to me
Say something clever to me
Say something stupid to me
Just don’t say nothing to me

When you make little sounds I know you’re in a foul mood
And you give me a look – Awww it just doesn’t feel good
I maybe make a joke – Aww you know that I care
I’m may be bein’ sincere, but I’m just dyin’ out there

Please don’t cry
You know I try to try
Don’t be so shy

Say something funny to me
Say something clever to me
Say something stupid to me
Just don’t say nothing to me

Aww what’s gonna become of us – well I said that before
Well I don’t know either – yeah, it makes me wonder for sure
I wish you’d just say something – something . . . anything!

You know, silence is beautiful but . . .
Please don’t cry . . don’t cry
Don’t be so sad

Say something funny to me
Say something clever to me
Say something stupid to me
Just don’t say nothing to me

Say some sweet nothin’ to me
Say somethin’ somethin’ to me
Say somethin’ heavy to me
That might have meaning to me

Say somethin’ stupid to me . . . don’t say nothin’
