Welcome to my secret place. In the deeper shades of the northern night, I dabble in the silent sonic world of sinister sounds. That’s me up there in the attic. It’s a dream. Or maybe it isn’t. Unfounded and possibly true.
I remember one particular late night when my studio used to be in the basement. Admittedly, I was playing stuff pretty loud and my TR808 was really throbbing in the low end. My wife came down in the middle of the night, annoyed, and asked, “What are you doing????” I evidently woke her up with my sounds. I replied, “Oh. That’s really interesting. I was working on a new song about things that keep a person awake in the night!” She didn’t think it was that interesting. The song was called Nightful. It hasn’t come out on a record yet, and I don’t know if it ever will. It’s pretty interesting though. You should hear it.
Credits: There’s only one guilty party on this song, and that’s me. I sang the vocals, played the guitars and synths (my Triton and Korg Monotron were big players). This was the first time I ever used an ebow on my guitar (Gibson Firebird). Ok. Two guilty parties. That’s Daryl Kozub (whose buttons I pushed) on special vocals.
Lyrics
Pushing My Buttons
by Wilfred Kozub
She lies awake when I stay up too late
I’m working on my signature sound
Foolin’ around, makin’ a rhyme,
Being obsessed and wasting some time
That’s how I get it done
And I have fun
Pushing my buttons
I don’t know much, so I write what I know
And I luck out every once in a while
Make a good sound, sing it in time
Get it pressed on my own dime
That’s how I get it done
And I have fun
Pushing my buttons
She tosses and turns with every sound I make
Doesn’t hardly get a wink
Rolling around, messing up time
Sinister sounds, overactive mind
Fooling around, makin’ a rhyme
Being obsessed and wasting my time
That’s how I get it done (pushing my buttons)
And I have fun
Pushing my buttons
I gave up long ago on the glory days (so long ago)
I couldn’t get arrested
And I still try but I barely get by
And at least some friends think I’m alright
Fooling around, making a rhyme
Being obsessed and wasting my time
That’s how I get it done
Pushing my buttons . . . and I have fun
Make a good sound, sing it in time
Getting it pressed on my own dime
. . . pushing my buttons
